What You Should Understand About the Cartel de los Soles
The drug trafficking mafia led by Venezuelan military officers is real, and it wouldn’t exist without Maduro’s support. But it’s not exactly what Trump says it is
As of today, the United States officially considers the Cartel de los Soles (i.e. the Maduro regime) as a foreign terrorist organization.
“Next week, on November 24, the US will designate the Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organization, in what looks like an obvious deadline set to let Maduro know that there is an expiration date for him to agree to leave, and that the window for a deal is narrow.
“If the US forgoes the designation or delays it, it would be a signal they are making progress in talks with Maduro. If the designation goes ahead on schedule, the White House might use it as the legal justification they have been looking for, however thin, to attack.
“The pressure to put to use the military assets in the region, and follow through on months’ worth of rhetoric, will make a dramatic move almost inevitable.”
Lula da Silva:
“A war right now makes no sense. We’re not going to repeat the mistake of Russia and Ukraine.
“It only takes someone to fire a shot for an endless war to begin. I’m worried because Brazil shares a long border with Venezuela.”
