Maximum Pressure on Steroids

The US-induced airline crisis has left Venezuela with only four international carriers still flying to the country.

Waiting for El Catire?

The oppo’s view: While the deployment in the Caribbean is already in place, opposition sources report it’s only a matter of time before the manner of attacks against Venezuela are decided by Donald Trump (…) They continue to report that the United States has made it clear that the only thing it will propose to Maduro is a way out, and that he will have to decide whether to accept that off-ramp, or face a more complex and violent solution, but that in any case there’s no going back on the US military deployment in the Caribbean.

Where we’re at: There’s no off-ramp that guarantees Maduro will remain safe and out of jail—not abroad, and not inside Venezuela even if he were to hand power to one of his own. So Maduro is cornered into braving the storm and hoping for the best. As we’ve said before, his strategy is to hunker down and call Trump’s bluff.
