Studying what’s been written about this disease – which we usually, unfairly, think of as purely feminine – I’ve found that hysteria comes to be the antithesis of history, in that it’s a condition that blocks the possibility to understand the meaning and the lessons of our failures and limitations. A historian says that hysteria is like a surface where everything that happens to us bounces, impeding what has been lived from becoming experience. This leaves us mired continually on the surface, without ever going deeper, without reaching an interior vision, without bringing together our past with the history of man on Earth. And so Venezuela is a hysterical country, subjected to infernal repetition. Our greatest poverty is that we lack a true history of our impoverishment…”
