It may be a blunder by Chávez, but there is an alternate explanation: [Puerto Cabello’s PSUV Mayor Rafael] Lacava has been reaching out beyond chavismo just by managing his city relatively well -at least by comparison with most chavista mayors. Perhaps Chávez prefers to risk  losing with Ameliach than nursing a new Henri Falcón or “Gato” Briceño.

If that’s true, or even if that reason factored in just a little bit, then it’s a perverse cycle. It’s the opposite of evolution where the best survive. Chavismo only will only offer the worst. Maybe that’s a good thing in the long run because it will destroy chavismo. Let’s hope they don’t destroy the country along the way.
