The workers’ president last week:
- State agents kidnapped Martha Lía Grajales, a grassroots chavista activist acting in support of mothers of political prisoners. She was released on Tuesday, August 12 after a smear campaign.
- Shortly after, gents arrested unionists Rusbelia Astudillo, a lawyer, and Roberto Campero, a teacher.
- Maduro floated the idea of reforming—or abolishing?— Venezuelan trade unions while invoking the need to overcome their “bureaucratic structures.”
- State propaganda accused the UCV’s Development Studies Center (CENDES), the socialist-leaning Rosa Luxembourg Foundation and other academic groups of running a subversive network.
