Atrévete 2.0: Electric (Crisis) Boogaloo

Rosales Strikes Back

Discretionally, the National Electoral Council blocked the opposition’s Unitary Platform from accessing the system to register candidates until the deadline passed: leaving the opposition, through its MUD card, without any candidate.

But just before midnight, with no official announcement, Manuel Rosales managed to inscribe his candidacy through the card of his party UNT (which had allegedly been blocked until then) and the support of Fuerza Vecinal. It’s still unclear if the Unitary Platform was notified of this and if it will support this candidacy. María Corina Machado’s position also remains unclear.

“We know that we are not going to the elections in the circumstances we would have wanted, but we are going because we know that it is our best opportunity”, said UNT’s Stalin González, “It is not intended to replace or replace anyone’s leadership, on the contrary, it is to take on a challenge for the good of all, and with the need to work coordinated for a common objective.”

Besides Nicolás Maduro and Rosales, who’s had a too-friendly approach with the government, the CNE also accepted the candidacies of ten candidates from the loyal “oppositions”. It also blocked dissident Chavismo’s candidacy.
