Maduro’s shaky gamble for salvation

“The Maduro regime sees a confrontation with the United States as a near certainty, and that they are frustrated about the little international support received by Maduro, including from traditionally vocal allies like Russia or China. There is also concern about the possibility of growing social unrest in a deteriorating economy.

“While some voices within chavismo, particularly Diosdado Cabello, seem to welcome the idea of a military conflict with the U.S. government, Maduro does not, and is doing all he can to avoid it—short of relinquishing power. His new hopes are on the shoulders of Richard Grennell, Colombia and Brazil.”

Precedent: In quite an embarrassing fashion, Petro and Lula failed to convince Maduro to show the actas (i.e. concede) after Edmundo González won the presidential election last year. Now, they are raising their voice to convince the Trump administration not to attack.
