Venezuela on the Web

Friend of the blog Jordi Amaral writes the Americas Migration Brief, and this week Venezuela makes an appearance (sadly): “Less than a decade ago, Venezuelans could enter Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama without a visa en route to the United States. Today, Venezuelans must go through laborious and expensive processes to enter those same countries.”

Gold in the beak of vultures

We learn from Arepita that Maduro’s lawyers in the UK (Maduro’s barristers) requested that the London court of appeals review their recognition of Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela. Remember that the only thing that was protecting Venezuela’s remaining gold in the Bank of England was the fact that the courts sided with the caretakership.

In other circumstances we wouldn’t mind much about this kind of news, but as the UN Trust moves forward (PRR readers have details on this), we can imagine scenarios where funds and resources will move around (hopefully to where it’s needed) and restrictions will be lifted. So, keep your eye on the golden eggs.

Todo chévere

We want you to join the conversation. We want your unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and stories that only you can tell.

We’re aiming for a compulsively readable Caracas Chronicles that features the kinds of debates that otherwise get lost in discussions in English about our country. We’ll do that by foregrounding our Venezuelan filter: Caracas Chronicles has always been about bringing a Venezuelan perspective on Venezuelan affairs.

So pitch, tell us about those subjects that obsess you. What would you like to write about in 500, 600, or 1,000 words?

Here’s how: Send us an email with your pitch. If you want to make a really effective pitch, read this document and follow the instructions there.
