“We’re not reading too much into Márquez’s appearance at Trump’s SOTU, other than a ‘good TV’ moment crafted by the Trump administration, but we’reseeing how different sectors in the opposition or the marginalized chavismo who distrust Machado (and are distrusted by her in return) are pitching Márquez as THE transition figure. And it is clear by the way he speaks post SOTU that he’s seeing himself in that role. Even if Machado should be the prohibitive favorite in a future election, those in the opposition, and those in between the opposing and chavismo, that don’t support her—some outright despise her—will surely run a candidate against her.
