Unanimously, the Unitary Platform, María Corina Machado and Manuel Rosales agreed that former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia –already registered in the National Electoral Council (CNE) as a “placeholder” candidate for the MUD card – will be the opposition candidate. On Saturday, representatives of Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) went to the CNE to officialize the resignation of Manuel Rosales, who declined to support González Urrutia.
The decision came after a series of long meetings that included the presence of Machado, Rosales and Márquez as well as the opposition’s chief negotiator Gerardo Blyde and the leaders of the Unitary Platform parties. Márquez previously said he hoped to be considered the Platform’s candidate.
While González Urrutia -a long-time member of the opposition coalition- is little-known, recent polls show he would win by a large margin over Maduro if endorsed by Machado and the rest of the coalition (as it happened). It’s unclear how the government will respond now.
